Whether that’s a laid-back barn, an industrial mill, or something a bit more offbeat, the shift towards unique and quirky wedding venues is only getting bigger.

As a wedding photographer, these are the kinds of venues I genuinely love shooting at. They’ve got character, flexibility, and (crucially) they don’t force your day into a cookie-cutter mould.

Here are six alternative wedding venues in the UK that bring something a bit different to the table.

The Giraffe Shed

If you’ve ever searched “alternative wedding venues” in the UK, chances are you’ve come across The Giraffe Shed—and for good reason.

It’s the perfect blend of rustic countryside and industrial edge. You get a big, characterful barn, loads of flexibility, and the freedom to make the space completely your own. Think street food vans, long tables, festoon lighting, and a proper party atmosphere.

From a photography point of view, it’s a dream. Soft natural light during the day, warm ambient light at night—it just works.

The Wellbeing Farm

Farm weddings aren’t new… But The Wellbeing Farm does things differently.

Yes, there are barns and countryside views. But there are also llamas in bow ties, a strong sustainability ethos, and a team that really leans into making your day feel relaxed and fun rather than overly formal.

It’s a great option if you like the idea of a rural wedding but still want something with a bit of character and humour running through it.

Holmes Mill

Industrial done properly

If barns aren’t your thing, Holmes Mill is a solid industrial alternative.

Set in a converted textile mill, it’s all exposed brick, big windows, and high ceilings. It’s got that raw, urban feel, but still polished enough to work brilliantly for weddings.

It’s also ideal if you want everything in one place: ceremony, reception, great food, and a proper bar setup. No faffing around between venues.

Victoria Baths

Beautifully unconventional

If the thought of getting married in a hotel makes you want to run for the hills, Victoria Baths might be more your thing. This old Victorian swimming baths in Manchester is absolutely packed with character: STUNNING original tiles, stained glass, huge old pool halls and loads of weird little details to discover.

It’s got that slightly rough-around-the-edges feel that makes a wedding feel like your wedding, rather than something pulled from a catalogue. And from a photography point of view? There’s bloody loads to play with.

Hidden River Barn

If getting married somewhere surrounded by trees, fields and a river sounds more appealing than four walls and a carpeted function room, Hidden River Barn could be right up your street. Tucked away in the Cumbrian countryside, it’s got that proper escape-from-it-all feeling, with loads of space to wander, explore and generally make the day your own.

It’s rustic without feeling too polished, and there’s plenty of natural beauty going on without needing to dress every inch of it up. I might be a little biased, as I actually got married here, but if you want your wedding to feel a bit more like an adventure, this is a pretty bloody good place to start.

Love Lane Brewery

Brewery Wedding Venue in Liverpool for a Laid-Back Celebration

If you like the idea of getting married somewhere with a bit of character, Love Lane Brewery in Liverpool is well worth a look. Set in the Baltic Triangle, it brings together exposed brick, industrial spaces, great beer and a proper relaxed atmosphere. There’s something mint about having a brewery as the backdrop to your wedding, it feels informal, social and a little bit different, while still giving you loads of scope to make the day your own.

Ultimately, the best alternative wedding venues are the ones that give you the freedom to make the day feel like yours. Whether that’s a farm in the countryside, an old swimming pool, a brewery or somewhere completely off the wall, choosing a venue with a bit of personality is a pretty good place to start.
